Drinking Water

water, everywhere, but none fit to drink. Less than 1 percent of the world's water is suitable for drinking. About 80 percent of the world's diseases are linked to impure water. Don't think modern man is immune from the effects of contaminated water. Chlorine, one of the most toxic chemicals , when added in small amounts to tap water, prevents the problem of typhoid and dysentery that still plague mankind in undeveloped populations. But chlorine produces its own by-products when combined with organic materials. These toxic chlorine by-products accumulate in organs like the kidneys or bladder that filter or store water. The result is an increased risk of bladder and kidney cancer. Some experts estimate more than 20,000 cases of these types of cancer occur annually from water chlorination. If you drink tap water, and you don't filter out the chlorine at the faucet, over the long haul you are exposing yourself to an avoidable health risk. This is not to mention the problem of cryptosporidium, a nasty parasite which cannot be killed by chlorine and which has contaminated various municipal water supplies, resulting in sickness and even death. Filter your tap water! , Tap water is really designed for washing machines and water heaters, not humans!!

Sedimentation

After the water leaves the flocculation basins, it enters the sedimentation or settling basins. Sedimentation is the removal of solids from water by gravity settling. Basins are designed to hold large volumes of water for several hours and to give a smooth, even flow. This design allows the velocity and turbulence of the water to be decreased to the point that the water will no longer transport the flocculated solids and they will settle to the bottom of the basin.

Filtration

After the sedimentation basins, the water flows to the filter beds. The filters remove suspended solids that have remained in the settled water. Filters contain material or "media" of graduated size in layers for removal of solids.

Chlorination

Chlorination of public water is the most important process used to produce sanitary drinking water. The process is necessary and highly efficient. The World Health Organization estimates that 25,000 children worldwide die every day from waterborne diseases resulting from a lack of water disinfection. Effective in 1999, the treatment plants no longer use concentrated chlorine gas and liquid. Instead, chlorine is received as a 15% solution of Sodium Hypochlorite. , Because of the facts that the distribution system is too long and complex, chlorination is always dosed with a higher level than required to avoide any contamination from this distribution system.

Health and Water

Incredible as it seems, water is quite possibly the single most important catalyst in weight loss. Water suppresses the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits. Although most of us take it for granted, water may be the "only true magic potion" for permanent weight loss and here's why: The kidneys cannot function properly without enough water. When they do not work to capacity, some of their workload is passed onto the liver. The liver's primary function is to metabolize stored fat into usable energy for the body. But, if the liver has to do some of the kidney's work, it cannot work at optimum efficiency. As a result, it metabolizes less fat and more fat remains stored in the body and weight loss stops. Drinking enough water is also the best treatment for fluid retention. When the body gets less water, it perceives this as a threat to survival and begins to hold onto every drop. Water is stored in extra cellular spaces [outside the cells]. This shows up as swollen feet, hands and legs. Diuretics [pills] offer a temporary solution at best as they "force" out stored water along with some essential nutrients. The body will again perceive this as a threat and will replace the lost water at the first opportunity. The best way to overcome the problem of water retention is to give your body what it needs, plenty of fresh clean water. If you have a constant problem with water retention, excess salt may also be to blame. Your body will tolerate sodium only in certain concentrations. The larger the salt intake, the more water your system retains to dilute the salt. But getting rid of unneeded salt is very easy, simply drink more water. As water is forced through the kidneys, it removes the excess sodium and water retention eases. Larger people have larger metabolic loads thus an over weight person naturally needs more water. Water helps to maintain proper muscle tone, by giving muscles their natural ability to contract and by preventing dehydration. Water helps to prevent sagging skin that usually follows weight loss as the shrinking cells are buoyed by water which plums the skin and leaves it clear, healthy and resilient. Water assists the body in expelling toxic wastes. During weight loss periods, the body has substantially more waste to get rid of as the metabolized fat is broken down and shed. Water also relieves constipation. When the body receives too little water, it siphons what it needs from internal sources and the result is constipation. With sufficient water intake, the bowel will function normally and constipation problems are minimized. In summary, we have discovered some remarkable truths about water and about weight loss: The body will not function properly without enough water and therefore cannot metabolize stored fat efficiently; retained water shows up as excess weight; to get rid of excess water you must drink more water; and drinking water is essential to weight loss, weight stability and proper body functions.

HOW MUCH WATER IS ENOUGH?

On the average, a person should drink eight - eight ounce glasses of water everyday. However, the over weight person needs one additional glass for every 25 pounds of excess weight. The amount that you drink should be increased if you exercise or if the weather is hot and dry. Water should preferably be cold, it's absorbed more quickly into the system than warm water, some evidence suggests that drinking cold water can actually burn calories! When the body gets sufficient water to function correctly, its fluids are balanced and you have reached the "break through point". This means that the endocrine gland functions normally and fluid retention is minimal. More fat is used as fuel because the liver is free to metabolize stored fat and a natural thirst desire returns.

Should I Treat My Water?

Whether or not to treat our drinking water is a matter of personal preference. mineral salts, heavy metals, organic chemicals, bacteria and other contaminants. Specific information on your local water quality and treatment processes can be obtained from your water district. We, of course, think it is a good idea to filter your drinking water. The state of the art method for doing this is by reverse osmosis. The range of impurities treated by this method far surpasses a carbon only system, and therefore we are using it as the preferred method in the following article. Another advantage of reverse osmosis is that it can be applied to country/well water (not in all cases) where a carbon filter is most often not an adequate answer for country water. Regardless of the initial quality of your municipal water it should be known that there is a significant difference between water treated by reverse osmosis and tap water. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS--heavy metals and solids that have dissolved into liquid form) count of Marin water is about 100-200 parts per million when it comes out of the treatment plant, A good water purifier will take out 95-98% , It is also important to consider what happens to the treated water after it leaves the plant on its journey to your faucet According to a study performed by Pierre Payment in Montreal over an 18 month period, a group of 1,200 people in a suburban area with reverse osmosis (RO) systems installed were compared to 1,200 people who drank tap water. He found that the adults who drank tap water (treated at a state-of-the-art water treatment plant using chlorine, ozonation and filters for bacteria and viruses), had a 35% or greater chance of getting gastroenteritis than those that had the RO systems. Of the children under 5 who were studied, there were from 2 to 4 children getting sick who drank purified water for every ten children who drank tap water and got sick. In addition to TDS and bacteriological considerations, there are also taste factors, which many people feel are important to consider. After all if the water tastes better, more of it might be consumed as a refreshing beverage on its own rather than always flavored in the form of sodas etc. In addition to removing impurities that affect the taste of water, the process of reverse osmosis doubles or triples the oxygen content surrounding the H20 molecule, in a process similar to the passing of water over rocks in a babbling brook. A charge is created by the movement of water across the surface of the filter's membrane (the heart of a reverse osmosis system), which attracts the oxygen to the pure H20 molecules as they pass through the microscopic pores of the membrane. This is why we call RO water "fresh pressed" and why it has such a fresh, sweet taste. Also, Among the chemicals added are aluminum sulfate, chlorine, polymers, copper sulfate, sodium hydroxide and others, which are necessary or helpful in treating water for large scale public use. These chemicals have a number of useful functions, such as helping to coagulate sediment for easy removal, disinfecting and destroying disease carrying bacteria, controlling corrosivity in the water to preserve pipes, etc., and all are EPA approved for human consumption at low levels. However, some of these chemicals, such as chlorine, add an undesirable taste and odor to the water. During times of reduced water velocities due to conservation efforts of the public, Chlorine may have other liabilities as well. It does its job by bonding with and oxidizing organic compounds. Oxidation can occur with the proteins and organic matter inside and outside our bodies as well, and have been associated with cell damage and reduced cell vitality by many nutritionists. Chlorine can also react with humic and fulvic acids to form undesirable organic by-products, such as Trihalomethanes (THMs). Various THMs have been classified by the EPA as either probable or possible human carcinogens, and have been associated with bladder and rectal cancer according to research performed by Dr. Robert Morris of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Volatile Organic Chemicals in Drinking Water

Volatile Organic Chemicals, or VOCs, are a group of water contaminants that can be very dangerous if found in drinking water at unsafe levels. They include some of the most common, toxic, and most widely distributed water contaminants. VOCs are among the most costly water contaminants to detect, and difficult and expensive for municipal water systems to remove from water. Currently, there are approximately two dozen VOCs regulated by the government. Health Effects of Volatile Organic Chemicals VOCs are dangerous and are known to cause certain cancers, including leukemia, and other diseases. The following are VOCs that are currently regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, and their health effects:

The Presence of Bacteria in Drinking Water

Bacteria are the most numerous organisms on the planet. There are literally millions of different types of bacteria. They are one-celled organisms and are present in everything from water to food, and on objects we touch every day. What's ironic about bacteria is that they are among the smallest organisms on earth, and yet, they can cause some of the greatest problems. We come in contact with millions of bacteria every day, and nearly all are harmless. However, some types of bacteria are very harmful, especially those from sewage, even when present in small amounts. Bacteria are the cause of some serious disease, such as cholera, that plagued villages and towns centuries ago. Unfortunately, less developed countries that do not have effective sanitation systems are still affected by diseases caused by bacteria and viruses from sewage. Most people develop an immunity to common bacteria at any early age. However, people with damaged or undeveloped immune systems, such as newborns, the elderly, AIDS patients, and cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, are less resistant to disease and are more apt to become sick as a result of bacterial infections. Bacteria found in drinking water come from several sources. The most common source is the soil surrounding the water system. Once inside the system, these soil bacteria colonize every available surface, where they grow and then continually slough off into the water thereafter. In addition, bacteria can get into water during construction and repair of water lines, and through cracks in pipes when water pressure fluctuates. Municipal water systems check for harmful bacteria levels on a regular basis. Since it is impractical to test for all bacteria, they test instead for the main sewage organism, called E. coli. If E. coli is present in water, it means that harmful sewage contamination has occurred. Bacteria can be described as either pathogenic or non-pathogenic, meaning whether or not they can cause disease. Pathogenic bacteria can overcome the body's natural defenses and invade healthy tissues. In addition, "opportunistic" or "secondary" pathogens are those that can cause an infection when an unusual opportunity, such as an open wound or suppressed immune system, presents itself. Very few types of bacteria are pathogenic.

Following are some types of pathogenic bacteria found in drinking water:

Heavy Metals in Drinking Water :

"Heavy Metal" in the water treatment field refers to heavy, dense, metallic elements that occur only at trace levels in water, but are very toxic and tend to accumulate. Most heavy metals are too rarely found in water to justify government regulation at all, but a few have been given Maximum Contaminant Limits (MCLs) and MCL Goals by the Environmental Protection Agency.

"Putting chlorine in the water supplies is like starting a time bomb. Cancer, heart trouble, premature senility; both mental and physical, are conditions attributable to chlorine-treated water supplies. It is making us grow old before our time by producing symptoms of aging such as hardening of the arteries.

DR. HERBERT SCHWARTS, BIOLOGICAL CHEMIST

Many carcinogenic agents take twenty to thirty years before the effects show up and then it is too late."

HEALTHY WATER FOR A LONGER LIFE - MARTIN FOX, PH.D Chlorine is the greatest crippler and killer of modern times. It is an insidious poison.

Most medical researchers were led to believe it was safe, but now we are learning the hard way that all the time we thought we were preventing epidemics of one disease, we were creating another. Two decades after the start of chlorinating our drinking water, [1904], the present epidemic of heart trouble and cancer began.
In the process of atherogenesis, chlorine is the essential agent." CORONARIES/CHOLESTEROL/CHLORINE

HEALTHY WATER FOR LONGER LIFE - Alzheimer's and Aluminum.

For years, researchers have puzzled over the surprisingly high levels of aluminum that turn up in the shriveled brains of Alzheimer's disease victims. While some scientists believe that the aluminum deposits are only a side effect of Alzheimer's, a growing number of investigators say that aluminum may play a central role in causing the disease that afflicts mostly elderly people. The latest evidence of a link emerged when Australian scientists reported that aluminum used to purify water accumulated in the brains of laboratory rats. The Australian study focused new interest on the issue at a time when Ottawa's environmental health directorate is preparing to propose Canada's first national guidelines for aluminum levels in drinking water. The Australian study was important, said the directorate's chief: DR BARRY THOMAS Lead and Learning. "We see decreased intelligence, hearing problems and smaller stature as a result of lead exposure." Even moderate levels of exposure can interfere with the ability to pay attention and may play an important role in learning disorders and antisocial behavior".

DR SUE BINDER

chief of the lead poisoning branch at the Centers of Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, Beaver Fever , Giardia, Cryptosporidium. These organic sporozoans, first described in 1907, were not recognized as a cause of human illness until 1976,Health and Welfare Canada The problem with lead is compounded by the fact that our senses cannot detect the lead levels commonly found in drinking water. You can't smell, taste, or see the lead. An "action" threshold level of 15 parts per billion (ppb) has been established by the EPA. " There is increased evidence for an association between rectal, colon and bladder cancer and the consumption of chlorinated drinking water, this according to the President's Council on Environmental Quality. Since asbestos exposure is cumulative, young people are in particular need of protection. "Adults have three or four decades to develop cancer after exposure". Mount Sinai's Dr. Landrigan Although giardiasis (Beaver Fever) probably receives the least amount of publicity, the organism that causes it, giardia lambia, is one of the most insidious pests in water supplies. According to an article in Opflow, a publication of the American Water Works Association, "it is the most common disease causing intestinal parasite in the United States." Speaking at the annual meeting of The Gold & Silver Institutes in Laguna, Niguel, CA.

Eaton said,

"Progressively restrictive legislation is confronting the use of chemicals, especially chlorine, which for nearly a century has been the primary medium for water disinfectants increasing pollution, utilities are forced to put far more chlorine into the supply chain."

Eaton explained

" The chemical reaction that oxidizes impurities when chlorine is added, also forms carcinogenic byproducts. Of course these same byproducts have been generated by chlorination for a long time but never in the quantities that are now being seen". David Eaton secretary of The Institute of Water Ionization Technologies in the United Kingdom and technical director of Roseland Hydronics PLC.

Personal Testimonials:

If a man is taking over the counter drugs or prescription drugs that contain chlorine and 85 of them do. Now take into account the chlorinated tap water, boiled or not. Now he will soon have erection and prostate problems. Then we may have the start of cancer later.

How do I know this and can I prove it?

NO. But I have been there and now live a chlorine free, chemical free, organic as much as I can. Loving every moment because I have all my parts working again, without pills.
